Did you know that the secret to better health probably has been sitting in your cupboard? Isn’t it great when a common ingredient has so many health benefits plus has a low cost? That ingredient is Turmeric.

WHAT IS TURMERIC?

Turmeric is a spice that has been used in India for thousands of years. It’s what gives curry it’s yellow color.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF TURMERIC?

Turmeric contains compounds called circuminoids, of which curcumin is the main active ingredient. It is a powerful anti-oxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation results in disease. By eating foods that reduce inflammation you are building a wall against disease.

There are numerous other benefits which include treating depression, boosting brain capacity, reducing heart disease, preventing cancer, and preventing arthritis. If you search the internet you’ll find no shortage of information on this super food.

HOW CAN YOU TAKE TURMERIC?

You can take turmeric a number of ways: via supplements, adding it to food, or drinking it in a tea. Curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. That changes if you consume black pepper with it, which adds piperine… a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2000%. Curcumin is also fat soluble, so it may be a good idea to take it with a fatty meal.

HOW MUCH TURMERIC SHOULD YOU TAKE?

Our research has shown a good sweet spot is to take 1 tsp of turmeric a day for overall wellbeing. If you are treating a chronic disease or other health issue, higher dosing may be required via supplements. We recommend that you research the ideal dose for your situation. Unlike some other supplements, there doesn’t seem to be an issue with over-dosing like green tea extract, but it still makes sense to take what is reasonable.

TURMERIC TEA

While it might not be practical to include Turmeric in every meal, drinking a tea is another option. You could just dissolve turmeric in water and drink, but it isn’t going to taste very appealing. Plus, it will lack the pepper needed for proper absorption. There are numerous recipes out there to make turmeric tea with the added ingredients for taste, absorption and additional benefits. But keeping these  ingredients on hand and mixing may is time consuming….but also ….MESSY!

Turmeric powder is very similar in consistency to Matcha. It can get everywhere! And those yellow stains can be stubborn. Why waste time when there is a better way?
