Two of my favorite things in the world are my mother and tea. If you combine the two, you get a marvelous combination! My mom has decided to share her “tea journey” with us. She hasn’t always been a fan and – like my sister (who I described in a previous post) – she started drinking tea solely for its health benefits. Now, however, she is a tea fanatic. I believe that if they had just one cup of great tea, many people would be hooked for life. Here is her tea transformation in her own words:
Tea has become a good friend of mine. I discovered it late in life, after my kids left the nest and when I found myself thinking more about myself. As I’ve gotten older, I have learned how what I eat affects my body – physically and mentally. I have decided that as long as I’m alive, I want to be as healthy as possible and to achieve that I must eat real food. Along the way, I’ve learned about the nutrients in green tea, so I began to drink it. To be more accurate, I forced myself to drink it. I’ve never been one who likes hot drinks, so tea was never an option for me. I grew up on soda and was never introduced to iced tea and found no reason to try it. So, drinking tea for my health was the only motivation that took me to that first cup.
To be honest, I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the flavor and I didn’t like drinking a hot beverage. But it’s grown on me. Sure, I still have to sweeten it with Stevia, but that’s okay. I’ve grown to love the flavor of tea and the whole experience – choosing which flavor I’m in the mood for; waiting for it to steep; the feel of the cup in my hands; the relaxing feeling that overcomes me as I sip. My journey has taken me from green tea to experimenting with any and all flavors. It’s so much fun! I never would have dreamed that a beverage could delight me so much! And if that wasn’t enough, I’ve discovered tea rooms and tea stores. What a treat to enjoy the atmosphere of a quaint little tea room where we are all there for the love of tea. The atmosphere is wonderful and what fun to try a different tea with each visit! Tea stores are another adventure. Just the scent alone is intoxicating. When I’m lucky, my daughters or a friend will go with me and I can’t think of too many things that are more enjoyable. How much better can it get? A healthy hobby. I love it!
