I have been a fan of Dr. Andrew Weil’s for many years.  In fact, I signed up for daily alerts from him.   I was delighted to get his recent email entitled “7 Ways to Prevent Cancer: Nutrition”.  As cancer seems to be ever increasing, I’m always interested in legitimate nutritional things I can do for my family and me to decrease the risk of developing this disease.  I read a wonderful, yet frightening, book this year called The China Study by Dr. T. Collin Campbell.  His message was crystal clear.  The consumption of high amounts of animal products in our daily diet is contributing to many diseases in this country. The typical American diet includes animal products in just about every meal, from bacon and eggs for breakfast to hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch and chicken or steak for dinner.  Milk, which the dairy industry has promoted for decades, is yet another animal product that we’ve all been encouraged to consume for good health and strong bones.  Having been diagnosed with osteoporosis, I’ve come to learn that milk is NOT beneficial to healthy bone growth.  For it to be a culprit in the development of cancer is beyond scary.  Even vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, make an exception for this animal product, along with eggs.  It just seemed safe to all of us.

7 Ways to Prevent Cancer: Nutrition

A healthy diet can help the body in its efforts to heal itself, and in some cases, particular foods can strengthen the immune system and lessen the risks of serious illness.  To help reduce your risk of some types of cancer, try the following:

  1. Avoid polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, and all foods that might contain trans-fatty acids (such as deep-fried foods).
  2. Increase omega-3 fatty acids by eating more cold water oily fish, freshly ground flaxseeds, and walnuts.
  3. Reduce consumption of animal foods and try to replace them with vegetable proteins such as whole soy products.
  4. Use hormone-free, organically produced products whenever possible.
  5. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  6. Eat shiitake, enokitake, maitake, and oyster mushrooms frequently.
  7. Drink green tea daily.

Those of you who are faithful T Ching readers will recall many posts offering this recommendation.   We believe that tea, especially green and white teas, offer profound health benefits.  By shifting away from high sugar beverages to tea, people can significantly impact their long-term health and wellness.  I would like to see the day when we introduce green and white tea to our children, thereby encouraging the next generation of faithful tea drinkers to adopt healthy habits.  I’m disheartened by the new statistics that report that our children are the first generation in recorded history who are not anticipated to live longer than their parents. I believe this simple shift to green and white tea can contribute to changing that dire prediction.  So drink up and share the message.   Tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet.
